Marathon anchors the middle Keys, roughly 75 miles southwest of Miami, and serves as the geographic and logistical hub for fishing the central Keys' most productive waters. The town straddles both the Gulf of Mexico shallows to the west and the deeper Atlantic to the east, giving anglers access to two fundamentally different fisheries within a short boat ride.\n\nThe backcountry flats west of Marathon—part of the vast shallow system that extends toward the Marquesas—are the draw for sight-fishing. Permit and bonefish work these turtle-grass and sand flats year-round, though spring and fall offer the clearest water and most consistent sight-casting. Tarpon move through the channels and deeper holes during summer months, particularly June through August, when they're predictable enough for dedicated anglers to target on fly or light tackle. The water here rarely exceeds six feet, and the sight-fishing demands accuracy and a quiet approach.\n\nThe Atlantic side—accessed via the Vaca Cut and deeper channels—holds different quarry. Kingfish, wahoo, and large grouper patrol the deeper structure, and the Gulf Stream lies within reasonable reach for those interested in offshore species. Winter months bring cooler water and more active pelagics.\n\nMarathon's infrastructure—fuel docks, tackle shops, and a concentration of guide services—makes it the easiest entry point for visiting anglers. The town itself is functional rather than scenic; the real appeal is the water. Guides here know both the flats and the deeper channels intimately, and the variety means a week-long trip can mix sight-fishing days with deeper-water opportunities depending on conditions and preference. The Overseas Highway runs directly through town, making it straightforward to reach from the mainland, and the relatively central location means less boat time to prime water than from Key West or the Upper Keys.
