My guiding year revolves around the incredible offshore opportunities San Diego offers, particularly the pursuit of Bluefin Tuna and the unique adventure of lobster trapping. The Bluefin Tuna season kicks into high gear from late spring through fall, with peak action typically occurring from June through October. During these months, I'm often running full-day or even overnight trips to the offshore banks and islands where these powerful fish congregate. The challenge of sight-casting to laid-up fish or battling a trophy tuna on the line is what makes this season so special. As the Bluefin migration tapers off, the California Spiny Lobster season begins, usually starting in October and running through mid-March. Nighttime lobster trips offer a completely different, yet equally thrilling, experience—hoop netting under the stars is a unique adventure that families and groups absolutely love. The Coronado Islands are a consistent producer year-round for species like yellowtail, which often overlap with the tuna and lobster seasons, making for incredibly diverse and action-packed trips.
