Fly Fishing the Catskills

Roscoe is the de facto capital of Catskill fly fishing, a small village in Delaware County where the Beaverkill and Willowemoc converge at roughly 1,500 feet elevation. The town exists almost entirely in service to trout: fly shops line Main Street, guides operate from storefronts, and most lodges sit within walking distance of the water. The Beaverkill proper—the main stem below the confluence—is what draws anglers, a freestone river that runs cold and clear through hemlock-lined valleys and holds wild brown trout, stocked rainbows, and brook trout in its upper reaches.\n\nThe fishing here is technical dry-fly work, especially during the famous Hendrickson hatch in May and the Sulphur emergence in June and July. The river runs 30–50 feet wide through town and downstream, with long pools, pocket water, and runs that reward precise casting and drag-free drifts. Water levels fluctuate with rain and snowmelt; check the USGS gauge at Roscoe (typically 2–4 feet during summer) before committing to a trip. The Willowemoc, which joins from the west, offers similar character but slightly less pressure and good dry-fly fishing in its own right.\n\nAccess is abundant: public stretches bracket the town, and several lodges and outfitters manage private or semi-private water. The Beaverkill Campground offers direct river access; Antrim Streamside and other lodges cater to visiting anglers with guides, tackle, and local knowledge. The village itself—with restaurants, a hardware store, and a century of fly-fishing history—makes Roscoe a rare destination where you can fish hard in the morning, eat lunch on Main Street, and return to the water by afternoon. This is not wilderness; it is the Catskills at their most concentrated and accessible, and the trout fishing is legitimate year-round, with fall and spring offering the steadiest conditions.
