My guiding year in south-central Idaho is dictated by the rhythm of the seasons and the incredible hatches that grace our waters. Spring begins with the Big Wood River clearing from runoff, typically by late June, opening up opportunities for dry-fly fishing with Golden Stones and Western Green Drakes. As summer progresses into August and September, the Trico and Mahogany Dun hatches become prime targets on the Big Wood and Silver Creek, with hopper-dropper rigs also effective in the afternoons. Fall is a spectacular time, especially on Silver Creek, where Blue-Winged Olives and late Tricos provide excellent dry-fly action through October. The Big Lost River and Mackay Reservoir offer year-round fishing, with winter midge hatches providing unique opportunities for those seeking solitude on the water.
