Fishing methods and approaches
The fishing year at Katmai Trophy Lodge kicks off in June with the opening of rainbow trout season, offering excellent opportunities for trophy fish on dry flies and nymphs, often with surprisingly large specimens taken on smaller patterns. As July arrives, the world's largest salmon runs begin, with King Salmon leading the charge, followed by the abundant Sockeye Salmon. This month also provides a fantastic variety for anglers, allowing for streamer fishing, mousing, dry fly action, bead fishing, nymphing, and Spey casting, with both big rivers and small creeks fishing exceptionally well. Grayling are plentiful in the smaller streams accessible via fly-out trips, and the pike fishing is also excellent.\n\nAugust sees the peak of the Sockeye Salmon run, with the last few weeks of the month becoming prime time for targeting trophy rainbow trout as they key in on spawning salmon, making beads and flesh flies extremely effective. This is also when many fly-out trips to remote streams in the Katmai and Becharof wilderness yield high numbers of Dolly Varden, rainbow trout, and grayling. Early September still offers good Silver Salmon fishing, alongside excellent rainbow trout and Dolly Varden opportunities in Katmai National Park and Becharof Wilderness. Arctic Char also begin to show in remote locations, providing a challenging but rewarding pursuit. As the season progresses into October, the focus shifts entirely to trophy rainbow trout on the Naknek River, where anglers swing streamers with two-handed Spey rods, even as ice begins to form on the guides, with colder days often producing distinct morning and evening bites.
