Key Largo Fishing Adventures

Key Largo sits at the threshold between the mainland and the deeper Keys, making it a unique hybrid fishery. The town anchors the northern end of the Keys chain, roughly 60 miles south of Miami, and straddles two distinct water types that define the region's appeal. To the west, Florida Bay's shallow flats—typically 1 to 4 feet deep—hold tarpon, permit, and bonefish year-round, with tarpon season peaking April through June. The flats here are clearer and more protected than many mainland options, and the sight-fishing for permit is particularly strong in spring. To the east, the Atlantic side drops quickly into deeper channels and reef systems where grouper, snapper, and kingfish hold. The reef structure near Key Largo is less crowded than waters further south, and the wreck fishing for large snapper and grouper is reliable in 40 to 80 feet of water. Backcountry poling for tarpon and permit dominates the guide scene, with most trips working the shallow banks and channels of Florida Bay at dawn. The area's position means you can fish flats in the morning and transition to offshore wreck or reef work in the afternoon without a long run. Winter brings cooler water and excellent tarpon fishing, while summer is prime permit season. Access is straightforward—Key Largo is on the Overseas Highway (US 1), and numerous charter operations run from the town's marinas. The fishing here lacks the exclusivity of more remote Keys sections but offers consistent action and the advantage of being the most accessible deep-water and flats combination in the Keys chain.
