Key West Charter Fishing

Key West sits at the tip of the Florida Keys archipelago, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Gulf of Mexico across shallow limestone flats and deeper channels carved by tidal exchange. The island's fishing splits cleanly between two worlds: the backcountry flats surrounding the keys hold permit, tarpon, and bonefish in water so clear that sight-casting is the dominant technique, while the deeper waters beyond the reef edge drop quickly to 600 feet, offering year-round access to grouper, snapper, and pelagics like kingfish and wahoo. The permit fishing here is among the most technical in the country—these fish are spooky and selective, requiring precise presentations and often multiple casts before a take. The flats themselves—particularly around Marquesas Keys and the shallow banks west of Key West—are accessible only by shallow-draft skiff, and guides here are expert at reading water and spotting tails. Winter brings cooler temperatures and clearer water but also more crowded flats; summer offers solitude and warmer conditions, though afternoon thunderstorms are common.
