Henderson Harbor occupies a sheltered pocket on the New York side of Lake Ontario's eastern basin, roughly 40 miles northeast of Syracuse and just west of the Thousand Islands. The harbor itself is shallow and weed-choked—ideal nursery water for smallmouth bass and walleye—but the real fishing happens in the adjacent open lake, where depths drop quickly to 80+ feet. This transition zone, particularly the shelf between 40 and 60 feet, concentrates fish seasonally and makes Henderson a reliable charter destination year-round. Walleye dominate spring and fall, when cool water pushes them into the mid-depth band; guides work live bait and jigging presentations along the breakline, often marking suspended schools on electronics. Smallmouth bass peak in early summer and again in September, with fish holding on rocky structure and weed edges in 15–40 feet. The harbor's protected waters also hold largemouth and panfish, making it a fallback option on rough-water days. Lake Ontario's water levels fluctuate with dam releases upstream, affecting access and fish location; most charters monitor the Oswego gauge and adjust presentations accordingly. The harbor itself offers easy launch and mooring, and the nearby village provides basic services. Weather on the open lake can turn quickly—typical of the Great Lakes—so most trips run spring through October, with June and September offering the most consistent conditions and the heaviest fish populations.
