At a Glance
San Diego's fishing reputation rests on its proximity to productive Pacific waters and a mild climate that keeps charter boats operating twelve months a year. The city sits at the southern edge of California's richest fishing grounds, where the California Current brings cold, nutrient-dense water that supports everything from schooling yellowtail and white seabass to kelp-bed calico bass and occasional tuna. Most fishing happens within 10–30 miles of the coast, making half-day and full-day trips practical from Point Loma and Mission Bay landings.\n\nYellow-tail fishing dominates spring through fall, with fish ranging from 15 to 40 pounds; live mackerel and squid are standard baits, though light tackle and jigging attract more active anglers. White seabass, a prized gamefish that can exceed 60 pounds, peaks in summer and fall, often caught on live bait near kelp forests and rocky outcrops. Calico bass (kelp bass) fishing is consistent year-round in shallow kelp beds, particularly around the Coronado Islands and nearshore structure. Winter brings halibut and lingcod to deeper grounds, and occasional bonito or barracuda add variety to summer trips.\n\nThe charter fleet is well-established and competitive; boats range from crowded open-party vessels to smaller private charters. Most departures happen before dawn, with anglers back by early afternoon on half-day trips. San Diego's harbor and bay system also supports inshore opportunities—spotted bay bass, corbina, and croaker in Mission Bay and the lower San Diego River estuary attract lighter-tackle enthusiasts and beginners. Water temperatures range from the mid-50s in winter to the low 70s in late summer, so layering is advisable even in Southern California's generally mild climate.

Methods
My fishing year is dictated by the incredible migrations and seasonal abundance of Southern California's premier game fish. From late spring through fall, we focus on the offshore pelagics and coastal favorites. The summer months bring the coveted Yellowfin and Bluefin Tuna, along with Yellowtail and Dorado, to the waters off the Coronado Islands and further offshore. As fall progresses, the focus shifts slightly, but the opportunity for large Yellowtail and other prized species remains. The winter and early spring months are prime time for long-range expeditions to the Revillagigedo Islands and Clipperton, targeting world-record class Yellowfin Tuna and Wahoo. Shorter trips during this period still offer excellent opportunities for Yellowtail and Calico Bass around the islands. We operate year-round, adapting our strategy to the seasonal bounty of the Pacific.
