At a Glance
The Catskill Mountains have shaped American fly fishing since Theodore Gordon tied the first Quill Gordon on the Neversink in the early 1900s. This region, straddling Ulster and Delaware counties in southeastern New York, remains a proving ground for technical dry-fly work on limestone-influenced spring creeks and freestone rivers that drop from the high plateau into narrow valleys.\n\nThree rivers dominate: the Neversink, which flows north through a classic Catskill landscape of hemlock and rhododendron before joining the Delaware; the Willowemoc, a smaller, more intimate creek system that holds selective wild browns; and the Ashokan, which feeds the New York City water supply and offers both spring-creek sections and faster freestone runs. The Pepacton Reservoir, created by damming the East Branch of the Delaware, adds tailwater opportunity downstream.\n\nWater temperatures stay cool year-round thanks to elevation (the plateau sits between 2,000 and 3,500 feet) and spring influence. Hatches are prolific: Hendricksons in April and May, sulfurs through summer, and a strong fall caddis emergence. The trout here—wild browns and stocked rainbows—respond to precise presentation and small flies. A 5X or 6X tippet is standard; 16 and 18 are working sizes. The season runs April through October, with May and September offering the most consistent fishing.\n\nAccess is straightforward. The Neversink has public water near Claryville; the Willowemoc is accessible from Route 17; the Ashokan's lower section offers wade-friendly runs. The region sits 90 minutes north of New York City and 40 minutes south of the Catskill High Peaks, making it easy to combine a fishing trip with hiking or simply to escape the city for a long weekend. Lodges range from rustic cabins to mountain resorts, and local guides know the seasonal patterns and hatch timing intimately.
